Proposed Closure of Milton Swimming Pool for 2026/27

The Milton Centennial Pool normally operates from November to April each year. Council is seeking feedback on a proposal to not open the pool for the 2026/27 season.

Construction of the new Elsie Stewart Community Library and Pool in Milton has begun, and operating the old Milton Pool is becoming increasingly difficult. Some of our main challenges are finding and retaining staff, and ageing equipment including pumps and chemical treatment. Pool user numbers have been declining in recent seasons due to the condition of the complex.

Closure of the Milton Centennial Pool for the 2026/27 season would result in an estimated saving of $115,000.

Estimated rates savings for the 2026/27 year:

  • Properties in the Milton community of services rating area: saving of $30.00 (incl. GST)
  • Rest of district: saving of $6.00 (incl. GST)

Impacts of not opening the pool:

  • Temporary loss of an important Milton facility.
  • Pool users would need to travel elsewhere for swimming lessons and pool recreation, such as to Balclutha. Local schools would be directly impacted.
  • Loss of training facility for the Milton Swim Club.
